Independence Day Reckoning: Raúl Castro Indicted on Cuba’s True Day of Freedom – Justice at Last and the Unstoppable March Toward Cuba Libre 2026.

Dear readers, friends, fellow exiles, seekers of liberty, and all who still believe that justice, though delayed, is never denied, today we reflect on the significance of the Raúl Castro indictment and Cuba Independence Day as moments of hope and accountability.

Today, May 20, 2026, is more than a date on the calendar.

One hundred and twenty-four years ago, after decades of heroic struggle—the Ten Years’ War that began in 1868 and the revolutionary fire of 1895 led by José Martí—Cuba officially declared its independence from Spain. For Cuban exiles and Cuban-Americans, this day has always been sacred: a celebration of the dream of a free, democratic, and sovereign Cuba forged in blood, sacrifice, and unbreakable will.

Yet on the island today, the communist regime refuses to honor May 20. It dismisses the 1902 independence as “false” or “incomplete” because of the Platt Amendment, and instead forces the people to celebrate the July 26 Revolution and January 1. The regime has tried to erase the true spirit of Cuban independence—but it has never succeeded in erasing it from the hearts of those who remember.

And today, that spirit roared back louder than ever.

On this historic Independence Day, the United States Department of Justice has officially announced a federal indictment against 94-year-old Raúl Castro and five others. A U.S. grand jury in Florida has charged them with murder and conspiracy to murder U.S. nationals in connection with the February 24, 1996, shootdown of two unarmed civilian Cessna aircraft operated by Brothers to the Rescue. The indictment was unsealed and publicly announced at Miami’s Freedom Tower—the very symbol of welcome and refuge for generations of Cuban exiles—right in the heart of our community.

This is the moment we have waited thirty years for.

Prosecutors first prepared an indictment in the 1990s, but it sat dormant—until the Trump administration revived it as part of the maximum-pressure campaign that is finally strangling the regime’s lifeblood. The same leadership that ordered MiG fighters to murder four brave Cuban-American pilots—Carlos Costa, Armando Alejandre Jr., Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales—over international waters now stands formally accused in an American court of law.

For every family that lost loved ones to the Castro machinery of terror, for every exile who carried the wound of “¡Viva Cuba Libre!” across the Straits, this is divine convergence. Justice has not been denied—it has been delayed until the perfect symbolic hour.

In Alejandro’s Journey: From Cuba’s Communism to America’s Freedom, young Alejandro Ramirez watched soldiers drag his father away for that same whisper of liberty. The same regime that murdered Juan Ramirez in the dark later ordered the daylight execution of four humanitarian pilots. The pattern of fear, control, and elimination of truth has never changed—until now.

Yet the deeper truth Alejandro’s story proclaims remains: Faith is not the absence of darkness; it is the presence of light when every external source has failed.

The families of Brothers to the Rescue lived it for thirty years. Alejandro and his mother lived through the blackouts of Havana and the terror of the crossing. The Cuban people living under rolling blackouts, scarcity, and despair are living it still. And today, on Cuba’s true Independence Day, that light burns brighter than ever.

This indictment is moral clarity. It signals to every tyrant that American justice does not forget, does not grow weary, and—when paired with the Cuban people’s internal courage—becomes unstoppable.

To my brothers and sisters still on the island: Do not place your ultimate hope in indictments or negotiations alone. Anchor yourselves in the faith that carried Alejandro across ninety miles of stormy sea. Pray without ceasing—then rise with quiet courage. Share what little you have. Speak truth in whispers that become roars. Work with excellence even when the lights are out. The regime’s days of rationing hope itself are numbered.

To those of us blessed to live in America: Never take this refuge for granted. Defend the free-market economy, the rule of law, and the God-given rights that make moments like today possible.

To every reader wrestling with your own “blackouts”—personal loss, doubt, or hardship—remember that the same God who turned Alejandro’s pain into a legacy can transform yours into purpose.

The hinge of 2026 has swung wide open. What began as anticipation in last week’s post has become a historic reality on the very day Cuba was born as a free nation.

The legacy continues. In Eternal Entanglement: Antonio Nuñez’s Journey, Alejandro’s grandson carries that same unquenchable spirit into the quantum age, forging the Quantum Covenant to end poverty, heal divisions, and shield dignity from every form of tyranny. In Echoes Across Time: Time-Travel Dialogues, history’s greatest minds remind us that free will and destiny dance together when anchored in faith and moral courage.

If these words stir something deep within you—gratitude for America’s promise, renewed hope for Cuba’s freedom, or fresh resolve to live with purpose—I invite you once more to walk with Alejandro, Antonio, and the voices of history.
